Annual Meeting - 2000 - Vancouver

The Hospital Automation Forum: Hospital libraries and the Internet in the new millennium
Moderator: Mindy R.Paquette-Murphy, Research Information Scientist, Sanofi-Synthelabo Research Division, Malvern, PA

This year’s Forum served as a continuation to the two-part Symposium which appeared in the Bulletin of the Medical Library Association in 1999. The three speakers’ dynamic presentations to a large audience took us from memories of telephone couplers to future technologies. Competition with the cruise ship on the other side of the wall gave each speaker a chance to ad lib about the various meanings of the blasting horn as he or she was interrupted. The audience loved it!

Eileen Stanley’s presentation, “Gazing into the digital crystal ball: advanced technologies and the hospital librarian”, gave us great visual examples of what technological tools are out there, and which are beginning to find acceptance in the health care field.

Sherri Fuller’s presentation, “Integrating knowledge resources at the point of care: opportunities and strategies for hospital librarians”, demonstrated what is already in use in the health care setting, and how her employer is already using those tools. Both Eileen and Sherri’s slides are available on the HLS webpage.

Ed Holtum’s talk, “Librarians’ roles in the hospital library: what changes and what doesn’t”, led us down memory lane (remember how exciting it was to search at 300 baud?), and back to the realities of what we face each day on the job. Practicalities vs. wishful thinking kept the audience entertained and pondering.
The Hospital Libraries Section Connection Reception immediately following the Forum provided an opportunity for attendees to discuss their questions and ideas with the speakers and other attendees. It was a wonderful way to wrap up the day’s programming!
