Annual Meeting - 2001 - Orlando

Publications, Portals and People

First there's the Preconference Symposium, "Leveraging the Web: Providing Innovative Health Information Services" on Saturday, May 26.

Sunday, May 27, we are co-sponsoring three programs: "Gene Therapy" (Cancer Librarians Section, primary sponsor), "An Information Oddity: the Quest for Reliable Resources and Tested Terminology in Alternative and Complementary Therapies" (Chiropractic Libraries Section, primary sponsor), and "Most Efficient Organization, Streamlining and You" (Federal Libraries Section, primary sponsor)

HLS is also co-sponsoring User-Oriented Collection Management (Collection Development Section, primary sponsor) on Monday, May 28.

This year our Annual HLS Information Technology Forum is "What is an Information Portal and Why Should I care?" from 10:30 until noon on Monday, May 28.

The following are materials presented at the Technology Forum:

Later that day, (from 5:45 until 7 pm) you will NOT want to miss the HLS Connection Reception. What an opportunity to meet, greet, and talk with other hospital librarians! Compare notes with hospital librarians you've never met before and hospital librarians you've heard of for years. Enjoy food and drink provided by some of our favorite vendors while you chat with HLS speakers and your HLS officers and committee chairs.

On Tuesday, May 29, our scrumptious lunch and business meeting will be followed by "A Publishing Odyssey: What Medical Librarian Authors, Readers and Purchasers Need to Know". Have you ever wondered what the differences are between various professional publications for hospital librarians? Would you like to publish an article and need to know more about the submission process? This exciting panel will include National Network Editors Katherine Stemmer-Frumento and Barbara Henry, Bulletin of the Medical Library Association Editor T. Scott Plutchak, Medical Reference Services Quarterly Editor Sandra Wood, Journal of Hospital Librarianship Editor Carole Gilbert and MLANet's Scott Garrison.

Wednesday morning, May 30, HLS is a secondary sponsor for the Educational Media Technology Section's program "Education Outside the Classroom: Decision Support and Information Systems Training in Clinical Settings."

All sessions will be in the fabulous Walt Disney World Dolphins Resort. For more information see the MLA Annual Meeting web site at www.mlanet.org/am/am2001/index.html and the Dolphins web site at  www.swandolphin.com/
